The Technology Department has seen much change over the past
few years as it has developed to meet the demand of changes
to the National Curriculum and further change in the
programmes of study within the subject of Technology &
Design. We now have a Key Stage 3 overview that fully
matches the national programmes of study, which provides
pupils with the chance to solve problems by designing and
making products in wood, metal or plastic that incorporate
either electronic, mechanical, pneumatic or computer
controlled systems for energy and control.
Having gained a broad based knowledge at Key Stage 3,
pupils have the chance to utilise and develop the knowledge
at GCSE. GCSE Technology & Design and CoEA Design &
Technology are offered as courses. In GCSE Technology &
Design, the experience is widened using the well equipped
Systems Area to include engineering based work using
computer controlled machinery. The pupils then undertake a
major design and make a project that is of their own choice.
The department's development has included research into a
relevant post-16 qualification. It has been decided that
GNVQ engineering at Intermediate level would be the most
appropriate and exciting course. The course will look at new
engineering products and incorporate the making of
engineered products and incorporate the making of engineered
products and hands on experience in motor vehicle
technology; it is hoped that we will be able to offer this
course in the very near future.
We are currently preparing for a major refurbishment
which will provide the school with a new and exciting
resource. This coupled with the introduction of new courses
will establish the development as one of the most forward
looking departments within the school.
