The Facilities in Ashfield Physical Education
Department were built in 1980. The school boasts
a sports Hall, Fitness Suite and gymnasium. Through
the years these facilities have been updated and
refurbished. The fitness suite in the department
was re-equipped with new machines, which has had
£30,000 of aerobic and resistance equipment (17 machines in all). This suite is proving very popular
not only with pupils, but with staff. The latest installment to the department was the renovation
of the sports hall, including a new roof and floor.
In addition to these facilities we have two soccer
pitches, one grass and the other an 3rd generation
synthetic field turf pitch, practice hockey areas
and bookings with Avoniel & Templemore Swimming
pools.
Pupils have the opportunity to experience many sports.
Ashfield is in the enviable position of being able to field
'A' & 'B' soccer teams. Many tournaments are held during the
year. One of our biggest recent successes is the Ashfield
Soccer School organised by John Spence on Wednesday
afternoons, with some 80-90 boys participating.
Boys in the school are also able to participate in cross
country, rugby team, hockey teams, athletics, baseball and
cricket to name a few.
Major events include Sports Day, Swimming Gala, Cross
country and the Primary Schools 5-a-side competition are
held each year.
Obviously GCSE Physical Education is a popular 'O' level
option with a average of 60% success rate over the last 5
years.
During Key Stage 4 students have continued to specialise in
a number of activities, enabling them to improve performance
to an optimum level with increasing independence for
devising, carrying out and evaluating their own personal
activity program.
Also, the opportunity has been given to
help/lead/officiate for others and, in doing so, develop the
necessary skills of negotiation, leading and being led.
They have experienced a variety of activities during
their course of study including:
Games, football, hockey, rugby, badminton to Key Stage 4.
Gymnastics to Key Stage 3.
Dance to key Stage 3.
Athletics, running, throwing and jumping to Key Stage 4.
Swimming, including competitive and personal survival to Key
Stage 4.
Health Related Activity, including circuit training,
weight-training and aerobics.
Outdoor Pursuits, including camping, hill walking,
bouldering and orienteering.
These have then taken place as Indoor and Outdoor
activities, both individual and group, with problem solving,
and the communication of Physical Education ideas to others.
As well as listening, observing and appraising, practicing
and refining a skill. It also includes using reception and
organised practice in order to improve. |
