In the Modern Languages Department, while giving our
students a sound knowledge of French or Spanish, we aim to
bring them to a high degree of competence in the language,
both written and oral. Students are assessed both by formal
examinations and continuous assignments. Throughout the
courses, most classes are conducted in the target language
facilitated by sympathetic language teachers who make use of
contemporary videos, audio visual and written materials
which form the basis of the language teaching. Written and
oral language are taught in a fully integrated programme
which encourages students to communicate effectively in the
foreign language, pursue an interest in the every day life
and culture of the other countries, develop international
understanding and above all emphasise the living language.
High expectations along with future high achievement at
GCSE level at Ashfield Boys' High School will help the
individual and also Northern Ireland to prosper. The year
2001 has been designated European Year of Languages and our
department awaits the arrival of Europe Day and joining the
European Studies Junior Programme in September 2001. |
