Year 9 LAC Music September
 

1.                Graphic notation - A form of writing music which uses dashes or other graphics.
 

2.                Stave - The five parallel lines on and between which notes are written.
 

3.                Clef - The symbol at the beginning of a line of music to indicate the position of notes.
 

4.                Flat - The sign (b) which lowers pitch by a semitone.
 

5.                Sharp - The sign (#) which raises the pitch by a semitone.

1.                Semitone - Half a tone; the smallest interval in music.
 

2.                Tone - The distance of two semitones; also to describe the quality of sound.
 

3.                Scale - A series of single notes progressing up or down stepwise.
 

4.                Passing note - A note played to link up two other notes.
 

5.                Chord - A group of three or more notes played together.

1.                Rest - Musical silence.
 

2.                Chromatic - The notes of a scale, moving by semitones.
 

3.                Forte - Musical term for “Loud”.
 

4.                Piano - Musical term for “Soft”.
 

5.                Crescendo - Gradually getting louder.

1.                Melody - The tune of a piece of music.
 

2.                Harmony - The sounding together of two or more notes.
 

3.                Crotchet - A musical note worth one beat.
 

4.                Quaver - A musical note worth ½ beat.
 

5.                Minim - A musical note worth two beats.

1.                Fanfare - A flourish of trumpets at a special military or  ceremonial occasion.
 

2.                Octave - An interval of 8 notes, counting bottom and top notes.
 

3.                Ensemble - Any combination of performers, but especially a small group playing individual parts.
 

4.                Quartet - A composition for four voices or instrumentalists.

1.                Blues - A style of jazz music which started in New Orleans.
 

2.                Folk music - Traditional music of a particular country.
 

3.                Syncopation - Used to vary the position of the stress on notes so as to avoid regular rhythm.
 

4.                Soundtrack - Music often used in a film.

1.                Arpeggio - The notes of a chord, spread, and played upwards or downwards.
 

2.                Metronome - Device for ticking a steady number of beats per minute, and therefore fixing the tempo of a piece of music.
 

3.                Manuscript paper - Special, lined paper used for writing compositions.
 

4.                Variation - Piece of music which is a varied version of an original theme or a well-known tune.

1.                Acoustic instruments - Instruments designed to produce and amplify sounds without the help of electricity.
 

2.                Symphony - A set of movements usually linked by a theme for an orchestra.
 

3.                Mute - A device fitted to an instrument which muffles or changes the tone by reducing harmonics and resonance.
 

4.                A Capella - Unaccompanied vocal music.
 


Year 9 LAC Music May
 

1.                Opus - Latin word for work.  Opus numbers on musical works show the order of composition or publication.
 

2.                Ornaments - Decorations of a melody shown through small notes or special signs.
 

3.                Pause - Sign which means that the note or rest must be held longer.
 

4.                Accidental - A flat, a sharp, or a natural sign found in a piece of music, but not in the key signature.
