Picasso
1.
Picasso
- Picasso is thought to be the greatest artist of the 20th
Century.
2.
portrait
- A portrait is a picture of a person or animal.
3.
profile
- A profile is a side view of a person’s face.
4.
monochrome
- When only one colour is used for a painting it is called monochrome
e.g. Picasso’s Blue Period paintings.
5.
abstract
art
- This term is used to describe images that are not easy to recognise
and paintings are often made of squares, spots and splashes of
colour.

cubism
1.
cubism/cubist
- The Cubists painted things as if they were seen from many different
directions – often simplified to geometric shapes. Picasso, Gris and
Braque were Cubist painters.
2.
Georges
Braque
- Georges Braque and Picasso were the founders of Cubism.
3.
founder
- A founder is a person who starts something.
4.
period
- A period is a length of time e.g. A school period lasts for 40
minutes.
5.
blue
period
- Picasso’s Blue Period started in 1901 after one of his friends shot
himself in a Parisian café. Various blue tones dominated Picasso’s work
for several years.
6.
rose period
- From
1904 Picasso became a happier person. This could be seen in his
paintings as he introduced new colours such as warm red tones and a
gentle rose pink. This was called Picasso’s Rose Period – he
experimented with pictures painted entirely in pink tones.

Guernica
- Guernica is one of the most famous paintings of the 20th
Century. It was painted by Picasso in 1937 and shows the pain and
suffering of war. Everything looks ugly and distorted. There are no
colours in the painting. The use of black, white and grey increases the
power of the image.
2.
Spanish Civil War
- The Spanish Civil War started in Spain in 1935 when Fascists led by
General Franco rebelled against the government.

collage – The word collage comes from the French word ‘coller’
meaning to stick or glue. Picasso and Braque invented this technique.
They included bus tickets, newspapers, shopping lists and scraps of
material in their paintings.
2.
paper cut-outs – The French artist Henn Matisse (1869 – 1954) used a
form of collage called “paper cut-outs” e.g. The snail.
3.
montage – is created when images or sections of a picture are used
to make a new picture.
4.
photomontage
– is created when only photographs are used to make a
new picture.

2-dimensional – a 2-dimensional work of art is a flat work.

relief – a relief is a 3-dimensional work which is attached to a
2-dimensional background or support.
3.
mosiac – is a technique which uses small pieces of paper, glass or
stone to create a decorative pattern.

assemblage
– an assemblage is created when a construction of 3D
objects such as boxes, cardboard, plastics and other materials is
grouped together.

– letters are abstract shapes which have meaning and when put together
form words.

hieroglyphics – are pictures or symbols used in ancient
Egypt to
represent words.

calligraphy
– comes from the Greek words meaning “beautiful
writing”.

graphic design
1.
graphic design - The main function of graphic design is to convey a
message in a striking manner. Graphic design deals with the more
commercial side of art such as advertising, printing and promotional
work.
2.
image - An image is something visual. It can be any picture,
illustration, sign, symbol, photograph or design.
3.
sign - A sign is used to represent
or point out something – such as the male and female signs on toilet
doors.
4.
symbol
- A symbol is something which stands for or represents an
idea e.g. the dove is a symbol of peace

graphic design
1.
logo - A logo – or trademark – is used by most companies. It
lets you know at a glance what the product or company is.
2.
poster - A poster is a large sheet of paper giving information
about an event or advertising something.
3.
graphic designer
- A graphic designer is a person who designs posters, book covers, logos
etc.
4.
Henri Toulouse (Lautrec 1864 – 1901)
- Lived in
Paris and is famous for his posters and paintings of Parisian night life
- cafes, dancers and cabaret artistes.

illustration - An illustration is a picture in a book or magazine.
3.
monogram - A monogram is a symbol made up from two or more letters or
numerals e.g. K9, your initials or C2k.
