YEAR 8 LAC MUSIC SEPTEMBER

 

1.          INSTRUMENT  -  An object for producing musical sounds.

 

2.          TEMPO  -  The speed at which a piece of music is performed.

 

3.          PITCH  -  The highness or lowness of a musical sound.

 

4.          DYNAMICS  -  The changes of volume in music.

 

5.          DURATION  -  The length of an individual note.


YEAR 8 LAC MUSIC OCTOBER

 

1.          NOTE  -  A single sound of a given musical pitch and duration.

 

2.          COMPOSER  -  A person who writes music.

 

3.          TEXTURE  -  The thickness or thinness of sound.

 

4.          TIMBRE  -  The tone-colour of an instrument or voice.

 

5.          STRUCTURE  -  The form or design of a musical piece.

INSTRUMENTAL FAMILIES

 

1.          STRING  e.g.  violin / viola / cello / double bass

YEAR 8 LAC MUSIC DECEMBER

 

1.          XYLOPHONE  -  A percussion instrument made of tuned wooden bars.

 

2.          GLOCKENSPIEL  -  A percussion instrument made of tuned metal bars.

 

3.          CYMBALS  -  Percussion instruments with plate-shaped discs of metal played by clashing together.

 

4.          MARACAS  -  A Latin-American percussion instrument shaken by a handle to produce rattling effect.

 

5.          DRUM  -  A percussion instrument of indefinite pitch which is struck with a stick.

1.          MARCH  -  Music in 4 / 4 time to accompany groups of people walking together in order.

 

2.          WALTZ  -  A popular dance in 3 / 4 time.

 

3.          CONDUCTOR  -  Person who directs and controls an instrumental or vocal performance.

 

4.          IMPROVISE  -  To perform / make up the music without printed score.

VOICES

 

1.          SOPRANO                          -                    Highest female voice.

 

2.          CONTRALTO                      -                    Lowest female voice.

 

3.          TENOR                                -                    Highest male voice.

 

4.          BASS                                   -                    Lowest male voice.

1.          ORCHESTRA  -  A mixed group of instrumentalists for performing music.

 

2.          OSTINATO  -  A musical phrase or rhythm which continuously repeats itself.

 

3.          RHYTHM  -  The beat of music played in time.  A regular repeated pattern of sounds.

 

4.          MAJOR KEY  -  Music which usually sounds pleasant or happy.

 

5.          MINOR KEY  -  Music which usually sounds unhappy or sad.

1.          CODA  -  A finishing section of a piece of music or a movement.

 

2.          MOTIF  -  A short musical idea that is usually developed in a piece.

 

3.          INTERVAL  -  The distance between two notes.

 

4.          DESCANT  -  A melody added above a given line.


YEAR 8 LAC MUSIC MAY

 

1.          RAGA  -  Set of notes in Indian music used as a basis for improvisation.

 

2.          TAL  -  Indian term for rhythm.

 

3.          GAMELAN  -  An Indonesian orchestra of mainly percussion instruments.  The music is built around two five-note scales.

 

4.          POLYRHYTHM  -  A number of different rhythms which fits together to form patterns.
