1.
computer
- This is the main part of the system. All other devices are linked to
the computer processor.
2.
monitor
- This device allows us to view the work we carry out on the computer.
3.
keyboard
- Called
the QWERTY keyboard, this is the device we use to type text, numbers and
punctuation.
4.
mouse
- This
pointing device is used to make choices, move around and draw on the
screen.

window
- The part of the screen which shows our work.
2.
icon
- A small picture that represents a folder, file or program.
3.
menu
- A list of choices that appear when I click on a text button.
4.
pointer
- A small arrow or cursor that moves around the screen as I move the
mouse.

title bar
Shows you
the name of your document. If you have not given it a name yet, it will
say Document 1.
2.
standard toolbar
Has number
of buttons with little pictures called icons which are sometimes clicked
instead of choosing from the main menu.
3.
formatting toolbar
Has
icons which let you change the way your text looks for example, making
the letters bigger or smaller.
4.
main window
The area
of the screen where you type.

font
Font is
another word for typeface. Both these words describe the actual shape
of the letters that appear on the screen where you type.
2.
default
This means what Microsoft Word has chosen for you before you
change it. So you can have default font name, default font size etc.
3.
alignment
This means whether the text is on the left, middle or right hand side
of the page.
4.
justified text
This has
a straight line down the left hand side of the page and the right-hand
side of the page like some books.

clipart
A
library of images on your computer.
2.
zoom
Icon on
the standard toolbar which allows you to increase the view of your page.
3.
handles
The little squares surrounding the graphic. When the handles are
visible the graphic is selected.
4.
corner
handles
Click and drag to make the graphic smaller or bigger.

distorting
Distorting a graphic means changing its shape. This will happen if
you drag one of the side handles.
2.
copy and paste
This
function allows you to have as many graphics as you wish without
inserting each individually.
3.
grouping
graphics
You can
group individual graphics into one graphic so you can move everything
together.
4.
dragging
You can move your graphic around the page by clicking and holding
whilst moving the mouse.

touch
typing
This means being able to type properly without looking at the
keyboard.
2.
undo
this allows you to undo a mistake by using the Undo Icon on the
standard toolbar.
3.
format
printer
Once the paint icon has been selected, you can paint a new
heading with the same format as the previous.
4.
page break
This
makes the computer take a new page.

vertical scroll bar
This
allows you to move up and down the document.
2.
tool tip
When you
click and hold down the scroll bar button, the tool tip tells you what
page you are on.
3.
overwrite
When you save a document it overwrites the original version. This
means it uses the same space again and the original version is lost.
4.
spell
check
By clicking on the spelling and grammar icon you can check the
spelling and grammar of your document.

A
program which carries out calculations on the data we type into cells.

microsoft
excel
The spreadsheet package we use in school
3.
workbook
A workbook contains several blank worksheets named sheet 1, sheet 2,
sheet 3 etc.

The cell
