YEAR 8 LAC HISTORY SEPTEMBER

 

1.          HISTORY  -  Something in the past.

 

2.          HISTORIAN  -  A person who studies the past.

 

3.          CHRONOLGY  -  The study of time and  past.

 

4.          A.D.  -  Anno Domini / After Christ.

 

5.          B.C.  -  Before Christ.


YEAR 8 LAC HISTORY OCTOBER

 

1.          PRIMARY SOURCE  -  Something made at the time of an event can be written or non-written.

 

2.          SECONDARY SOURCE  -  Something made at a later time after the event happened.

 

3.          EVIDENCE  -  Clues from the past which help us explain history.

 

4.          ARTEFACT  -  Man made object.

 

5.          ARCHAEOLOGY  -  The study of physical remains of the past.


YEAR 8 LAC HISTORY NOVEMBER

 

1.          VIKING  -  A person from Norway, Sweden or Denmark.

 

2.          SAXON  -  People who ruled England before the Normans.

 

3.          NORMANS  -  A person from Normandy who came from a Viking family.

 

4.          NORMANDY  -  An area of Northern France where the Vikings settled in 911 AD.

 

5.          SETTLER  -  A person who makes his home in a new country.


YEAR 8 LAC HISTORY DECEMBER

 

1.          CHALLENGE  -  An invitation to fight.

 

2.          CLAIM  -  To say firmly that one has a right to something.

 

3.          RETREAT  -  To go backwards / to withdraw.

 

4.          BAYEUX TAPESTRY  -  A Primary Source.  A long piece of cloth with pictures sewn onto it which tells the story of the Conquest of England.

 

5.          DOMESDAY BOOK  -  A record made in 1086, of the ownership of the land in England, by order of William the Conqueror.


YEAR 8 LAC HISTORY JANUARY

 

1.          FEUDAL SYSTEM  -  A method of holding land by giving service, rather than money to the owner.

 

2.          HOMAGE  -  To give respect to.

 

3.          BARON  -  A person who held land from the King.

 

4.          PEASANT  -  A person who held land from the baron.

 

5.          VILLEIN  -  A person who has some land but worked for the Lord of the Manor.

 

6.          FEALTY  -  An Oath of Loyalty.


YEAR 8 LAC HISTORY FEBRUARY

 

1.          MOTTE  -  A small hill that has a tower / wooden fort built on top of it.

 

2.          KEEP  -  A  tower built on top of the motte that could be used as a look out.

 

3.          BAILEY  -  An enclosed area (on a smaller hill than the moat) where the soldiers lived.

 

4.          MOAT  -  A deep ditch surrounding a castle.  Sometimes it would be filled with water.

 

5.          WOODEN BRIDGE  -  This connected the keep to the bailey.


YEAR 8 LAC HISTORY MARCH

 

1.          FREEMAN  -  A farmer or craftsman who owned his own land, or rented it from the Lord of the Manor without having to work for him.

 

2.          GAELIC  -  To do with the Irish language and customs.

 

3.          CUSTOMS  -  Habits carried out by a group of people.  The Anglo-Normans brought their customs to Ireland with them.

 

4.          SETTLERS  -  Someone who goes to live in a new country.

 

5.          MERCENARY  -  A soldier who fights for a reward e.g. Money or Land.


YEAR 8 LAC HISTORY APRIL

 

1.          STRONGBOW  -  A Welsh Norman whose real name was Richard de Clare, who married Dermot Mac Murrough’s daughter, Aoife.  He later became King of Leinster.

 

2.          JOHN DE COURCY  -  A Norman Knight who attacked and captured Downpatrick in 1177, and he built Carrickfergus Castle.

 

3.          OVERLORD  -  Someone who rules over another person.

 

4.          VASSAL  -  A vassal holds land belonging to a lord and he owes the lord loyalty and service in return for the land.

 

5.          KNIGHT  -  A heavily armed soldier on horseback.


YEAR 8 LAC HISTORY MAY

 

1.          ARCHER  -  A person who shots arrows from a bow.

 

2.          LONGBOW  -  A bow from which a well trained archer could fire 10-15 arrows per minute.

 

3.          FLETCHER  -  A man who made arrows.

 

4.          ARROW SLIT  -  A narrow gap in a castle wall for firing arrows through.

 

5.          CASTLE  -  A fortified dwelling built to protect people from their enemies.  They were first built from wood and later, from stone.

 

6.          BATTLEMENTS  -  The top of castle walls where soldiers kept look-out.
